The Tom Farndon Memorial
An Art Deco tomb in the form of a motorbike racer is perhaps Coventry's most unusual monument.
Richard Ormerod (1896 - 1979) carved this piece out of black granite and it stands in St. Paul's Cemetery off Holbrook's Lane.
Tom Farndon was born in Coventry in 1910 and was a speedway rider who was British Individual Match Champion, and won the Star Riders' Championship in 1933 as part of the Crystal Palace Glaziers team.
He was killed in a crash while racing at the New Cross Rangers Stadium – aged just 24.
George and Richard, the Ormerod Brothers, were professional sculptors working in Coventry between the wars.
Among their other achievements was the design of a number of car mascots.
Be careful visiting this one at dusk - there have been reports of Tom Farndon’s ghost riding a motorcycle around the cemetery.
