Not a lot of people know this but … scenes for the original 1969 Italian Job were filmed in Coventry.
Although the entrance and exits to the sewer in the car chase were shot in Turin the interior scenes were filmed in the Birmingham-Coventry Tithebarn main sewer located in Stoke Aldermoor (starts 5min 13secs in video).
According to www.theitalianjob.com, stunt driver Remy Julienne attempted to do a full 360-degree loop in the tunnel.
On his first attempt the car fell off the walls, on his second the vehicle skidded on algae and on the third he hit a lip at the top of the tunnel – ruining the mini’s suspension.
There is a display in Coventry Transport Museum dedicated to Coventry’s role in the film.
