A movie celebrating Lady Godiva and filmed in Coventry is finally going to be released on DVD, its creators have revealed.

In 2007 Lady Godiva: Back in the Saddle was shown in cinemas across the Midlands.

But difficulties meant the film was never released on DVD.

Writer Heath Jones told It’s All About Coventry: “Just three days ago we signed a deal with Quantum Films in Mumbai so it should be released in the new year.

“Until now we had found it very hard to accept an offer. We had to wait for the right deal to come along.”

The comedy was directed by Baz Taylor and starred comedian Tony Slattery, former Steps pop singer Faye Tozer and socialite Christine Hamilton.

Mr Jones, 41, who was brought up in Grange Avenue, Binley, but now lives in Florida, said he got the idea from Belgian chocolates.

He said: “I was living in Los Angeles in August 2001 and coming home when we stopped in Detroit.

“There was a girl selling Lady Godiva-themed Belgian chocolate and I said, "I come from Lady Godiva’s home town".

“She said: ‘You don’t look like you come from Brussels".

“And that got me thinking that it’s such a big brand around the world and nobody really knows anything about it.”

The father-of-two secured £2million of funding and shot the film in and around Coventry in February and March 2006.

“Everyone was so helpful and Coventry's got some beautiful buildings,” he said.

“We shot around the cathedral, the Leofric Hotel, the Ramada Hotel and Draper’s Hall near the cathedral, which is really overlooked.

“Coventry is such a great place for filming.”

So great he has written another screenplay featuring the city – and hopes to secure funding to shoot it here too.

He said: “It’s called Stepping Out and is set in the early eighties in Coventry.

“It is the story of man who is in a pre mid-life crisis. He discovers that his childhood sweetheart has died and through a discussion with friend, relives the summer of '82, hoping to find closure on events which shaped the rest of his life.”
