BUNGLING thieves stole a massive 200kg safe … only to find it empty.

A gang of five crooks spent 25 minutes distracting shopkeeper Warren Ketheesh as two accomplices sneaked into a back office.

They then heaved the 2ft sq safe down a flight of stairs and THROUGH the shop before fleeing.

Their daft crime was even caught on CCTV on Wednesday [January 28].

Last laugh ... Thieves disposed of a useless old safe for him

Mr Ketheesh, 44, said: “They did me a favour really.

“I’d been trying to get rid of the safe for ages but it was just too heavy. I never used it.

“I only discovered they had taken it when I looked at the CCTV about 11.30pm and they had come in about 5pm.

“When I looked at the CCTV I went cold. Somebody had been in my private room.

“But when I checked my wallet was still in my coat I laughed.”

Mr Ketheesh, who owns Whitley News in Coventry, said a woman with gold teeth led the gang.

He said: “She had at least four gold teeth and she spoke with an eastern European accent.

“She pretended she did not know much English.

“She must have carried out at least eight transactions at the till. She kept on trying to get me to come out from behind the till to ask me questions.”

CCTV footage of the raid shows the gangleader and her accomplices constantly buying items from, and asking questions of, Mr Keetheesh.

He said: “They were constantly trying to confuse me by asking questions so I didn’t look at the doorway that leads out back.

“They probably spent about £50 in all.”

Mr Ketheesh added: “It was scary when I looked at the footage but thinking back I probably came out of it better than them.”

DI Bob Pettipher, of West Midlands Police, said: “We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed, or was around the shop at the time of this incident. All calls will be treated in confidence."

Anyone with information about the theft should call Chace Avenue on 0845 113 5000.
