COVENTRY scooped seven out of eleven lifestyle awards in a competition celebrating the best businesses across the region.

And Spon Street was a hotbed of success, bagging both the best bar and the best restaurant gongs.

The Godiva Awards are open to businesses in Solihull, Rugby, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon Avon and Warwick.

Yet it was Coventry that out tops in the Lifestyle section – voted for by members of the public.

The Best Bar award went to The Tin Angel and the Best Restaurant gong to Turmeric Gold – both in Spon Street.

The Best Club award was won by Rainbows in Short Street, the Best Café by Chats in Cathedral Lane Shopping Centre and the best pub to The Greyhound Inn at Sutton Stop.

Earlsdon’s Criterion won the Best Theatre award and Caludon Castle Sports Centre bagged the Best Health and Fitness Venue.

Coventry also did well in the Business Awards section – winning three out of six gongs.

The Best Family Friendly Venture went to The Transport Museum, the Best Business Innovation to The Herbert Media Centre, the Best New Venture to American Imports and The Best Conference Venue to The Ricoh Arena.

Coventry City Council’s Best Bar None Award – a gong given a business for promoting responsible drinking - was won by Carey’s nightclub.

TV celebrity Jane Middlemiss gave out the awards at a glitzy bash at Warwick Arts Centre last night.

The Godiva Awards were developed by CV One and sponsored by a number of organisations.

These included The Coventry Telegraph, Coventry City Council, Coventry University, Coventry Best for Business, City College Coventry, Feel Alive Magazine, Regional Development Agency, Coventry City Ambassadors Group and Mercia FM.
