A FREE exhibition honouring Coventry’s music history is to open at The Herbert.

More Than Two Tones will feature memorabilia linked to artists from The Selecter, The Primitives, Hazel O’Connor, Stereo Nation, The Enemy and The Specials.

The exhibition will also premier a documentary incorporating interviews with Tom Clarke (The Enemy), Pete Waterman, Neol Davies (The Selecter), Pauline Black (The Selecter) and Lynval Golding (The Specials).

Herbert senior curator Martin Roberts said: "An exhibition celebrating the music of Coventry is long overdue.

“Artists from the city have had an amazing impact around the world and it's astounding to see the successes and achievements that these artists have had.

"The Herbert is really proud to have the opportunity to display the exciting array of items and artefacts that have been collected, some of which have come from the artists themselves.

“We are sure that people from Coventry will take pride in their city and its music."

Memorabilia on show will include:

  • Life-size cardboard cut-outs of Hazel O'Connor, Ray King and Tom Clarke

  • Stage costumes from The Pinkertons and Zodiacs

  • The Pinkertons' bass guitar

  • The original score of Edelweiss by Vince Hill

  • Gold and silver discs from Hazel O'Connor

  • Hand-written song lyrics from The Specials

As part of the More Than Two Tones exhibition The Herbert Café will be showcasing some of the newest and most exciting local talent in a series of Acoustic Sundays. These afternoons offer free live performances with the first taking place on November 15.

There is also an opportunity to take part in workshops run by former Selecter artist Neol Davies in his Modern Electric Guitar Academy (MEGA).

More Than Two Tones runs from October 3 until January.
