You've got to laugh: Coventry-born promoter Liam Jones

A NEW comedy night will be launched in Coventry this week.

On Thursday Taylor John’s House is set to host its first Laughter Lounge.

America’s funny man Neil Hamburger will headline at the Canal Basin venue and support will come from Jonathan Elston, Hannah Dunleavy and ‘Sammi and Tilly’.

The city already has comedy nights at Carey’s in Hertford Place and at the Showcase Cinema in Gielgud Way.

But Coventry-born promoter Liam Jones, 23, reckons there’s plenty of room for more.

He said: “Coventrians always need a good laugh don't they?

“Coventry has a lot of entertainment and events going on but the more the better I say.

"If we can get people from in front of TVs out to see live entertainment then Hoorah!

“It will benefit local comedians too. We have Jonathan Elston performing on our launch night – he’s a Coventry Uni student’.

Mr Jones also believes he has bagged the perfect venue.

He said: “Taylor John’s House is a well established arts and music venue.

“Their program attracts not only acts from across the world but audience members too.

“With this in mind – and it being a beautiful setting in the Canal Basin's coal vaults – we can’t really go wrong.”

Mr Jones, who grew up in Bedworth, said he had successfully set up a comedy night in Wolverhampton where he has lived for three years.

He said: “I’ve run a regular night there for the past year which has been going very well.

“I've booked acts such as Norman Lovett who was Holly in Red Dwarf and Janice Connolly who was Holy Mary in Phoenix Nights.”

The Laughter Lounge will run at Taylor John’s House on the first Thursday of every month.

Tickets for December 4 cost £8 and are available from The Tin Angel. Doors open at 8pm.
