New £36m building plans revealed

The new building will help create 250 full time jobs
THESE are the first images of a new Coventry University building.

If given the green light by councillors on Thursday - December 18 - it will open in the autumn of 2010.

The building – which represents the first stage of a £160million university facelift - will house a student union, shops, student counselling and study rooms, and a gig venue.

The council’s planning department have recommended councillors approve the four storey structure.

Councillor Gary Ridley, cabinet member of city development, said: “I believe that the Student Enterprise Building will be the heart of student activity in the city centre.

“It will be a one-stop-shop for students and the hub of social activity day and night.

“I think it will enhance the student experience in Coventry and is the first step of an exciting master plan which ties in with the city council’s overall plan for the city centre.”

Students numbers will rise from 14,000 to 15,000
David Soutter, pro vice chancellor at Coventry University in charge of the master plan, is equally excited.

He said: “Applying for planning permission is the start of a very exciting phase in the development of Coventry University.

“The facilities at the new Student Enterprise Building will be a focal point for students and provide some more choice for shoppers in Coventry as well.”

Councillors will also be asked to approve the demolition of the Frank Whittle building which lies on the site beside The Herbert.

The new Student Enterprise Building represents the first stage of a five year £160m redevelopment of Coventry University.

Further plans include a new computer and engineering building in Gulson Road and a new multi-storey car park in Gosford Street.

It is estimated the scheme will boost the number of students from 14,000 to 15,000, the number of staff from 2,000 to 2,250 and the university's annual income from £144million to £200million.
