COVENTRY’S Phoenix pub has been fined £5,500 after mice droppings were discovered in its kitchen.

Owners Mitchells and Butlers Retail Ltd were also ordered to pay £1,227 costs during a hearing at Coventry Magistrates’ Court today.

Mitchells and Butlers Retail Ltd admitted a series of food safety offences.

Magistrates heard that on November 13 last year Coventry City Council's environmental health department visited the Gosford Street pub to carry out a routine food hygiene inspection.

But on arrival inspectors discovered mouse droppings in several areas of the kitchen plus other hygiene offences.

These included:

• Dirt and debris on the floor and behind equipment.
• Grease on the walls.
• Areas touched by food handlers were dirty and greasy.
• Cooking equipment was dirty with accumulations of dirt and debris having built up.
• Equipment used for the preparation and storage of food was dirty.

As inspectors judged there was an imminent risk of injury to health, the business agreed to voluntarily close.

A revisit was carried out the following day as a pest control contractor had visited and treated for the mice infestation.

The premises was allowed to re-open, but management agreed to remain closed for the remainder of the day as there were some areas where further cleaning was advised and pest control had advised sticky boards should be put down.

Further visits were carried out at the premises and cleanliness has improved, inspectors said.

Cllr Hazel Noonan, cabinet member for city services, said: “This is quite a substantial fine and I am pleased that the courts are taking these matters seriously.

“It is a reminder to all retailers that they have a duty to their customers to prepare food for consumption in an hygienic and safe environment.”

No one from Mitchells and Butlers Retail Ltd was available for comment.
