A pirate's flag flies proudly at Coventry's Belgrade Plaza development

December 9, 2008

Someone’s having jolly good laugh.

Jokers building Coventry’s Belgrade Plaza have hoisted a pirate’s flag – just yards from a sign boasting they are “improving the image of construction”.

The flag flies on what will be a new 119 bedroom Premier Inn hotel.

Sean Kirk, site manager for Vale Builders Southern Ltd, said contracted electricians had put up the pirate icon.

He said: “Some of our sparkies have been using it to mark the place for deliveries - so they can say just say put the deliveries over by the flag.

“The guy who put it up is a bit way out – he’s got long hair and a pony tail.”

Mr Kirk said he didn’t think the flag was intended to be so close to the “considerate constructors” sign.

He added: "We’re working lads who like a bit of humour now and again."

The sign is given out by the Considerate Constructors Scheme – a national initiative set up by the construction industry to improve its image.

The organisation declined to comment on the flag.
