Best bit: Steak to die for
Worst bit: Amazingly bland chicken and pasta dish

The steak was perfection.
I would challenge anyone to find a better 10oz rump steak with romano sauce for £11.50 in Britain.
Ordered rare it was succulent, mouth-watering and so tender the steak knife cut though it like butter.
Unfortunately it was my dining partner’s choice and she would not allow me more than two mouthfuls.
Even more regrettably my breaded chicken breast with sautéed asparagus, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes in garlic butter with tagliatelli (£8.95) was not in the same league.
The chicken was well cooked with a mildly flavoursome bread coating and the asparagus was suitably crisp.
But I struggled to taste any garlic and the tagliatelli did not seem to have been salted during cooking.
Overall it was a very bland dish. The chips accompanying the steak were average.
When I say average I mean slightly under-cooked pub chips. When are landlords going to realise chips should always (without exception) be golden and crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle? They should remain this way despite lashings of salt and vinegar.
Pubs should also make chips a top priority on their menus. Not only because they are a favourite of mine but because they are served more than anything else.
The interior of The Old Mill is beautiful. If you stumbled across this place after walking several miles on a stormy night you could be forgiven for believing you had walked into heaven. Thick carpet, wooden panels and soft lighting make it supremely cosy.
All in all The Old Mill is well worth a visit – just don’t order the breaded chicken and ask for well cooked chips.
