Watch cops trap car thieves

February 5, 2009

FOOTAGE of crooks breaking into cars has been released by West Midlands Police.

A short video shows criminals targeting police decoy vehicles fitted with surveillance cameras.

Clips from the hidden cameras have been used to convict thieves across the region.

Now cops are using the footage to warn drivers how quickly cars can be broken into.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hyde said: "Year on year West Midlands Police are reducing the number of thefts from vehicles.

"But with the help of drivers we can make life increasingly difficult. This is a crime which is easily avoidable if car owners take a second to look at their car from a thief’s perspective.

"Before you walk away, check for the tell tale signs – have you left anything on view, does your windscreen have a round mark left by a sat nav?"

He added: "The loss of personal items is bad enough but this is a crime that causes untold aggravation and it’s one which could be so easily avoided."
